The Six-Sided Shape That Quietly Took Over American Bathrooms
If you've ever stayed in an older hotel, walked through a vintage diner, or visited a friend's pre-war apartment, you've seen them. Small white hexagonal tiles, packed together in tight formation across the bathroom floor. Maybe a border of black ones around the edge. The pattern is so familiar it barely registers—just the way bathrooms look, like porcelain fixtures and chrome faucets. But the hexagon didn't end up on America's bathroom floors by accident of taste. It ended up there through a chain of practical decisions made by engineers, manufacturers, and city planners over more than a century, and the aesthetic we now associate with "classic bathroom design" was never really about aesthetics at all.
It Started With the Romans
The hexagon's long relationship with floor coverings begins, as so many things do, with Roman engineers who were trying to solve a structural problem. Roman mosaic floors—found throughout the empire, from Italy to North Africa to the British Isles—frequently used hexagonal tessellation because of a simple geometric property: hexagons tile a flat surface without gaps or overlaps, distributing weight and stress more evenly across the plane than squares or rectangles.
This wasn't purely aesthetic. Floors in Roman bathhouses and public buildings needed to withstand heavy foot traffic, moisture, and temperature changes. Small, tightly fitted tiles in a hexagonal arrangement created a surface with more grout joints, which paradoxically made it more resistant to cracking—when one tile shifted slightly, the surrounding tiles could absorb the movement without fracturing. Roman engineers understood this empirically even if they didn't have the materials science vocabulary to explain it.
The hexagonal floor pattern persisted through Byzantine and Islamic architecture, appeared in medieval European church floors, and by the Renaissance had become a recognized symbol of geometric sophistication. But it remained labor-intensive and expensive—each tile had to be cut individually, laid by skilled craftsmen, and grouted by hand. For most of history, hexagonal tile floors were a luxury.
The Machine That Made Hexagons Cheap
Everything changed in the mid-1800s, when the Industrial Revolution reached the ceramics industry. American and British manufacturers began developing hydraulic presses capable of stamping clay into precise, uniform shapes at high volume. Square tiles were easy to produce this way—simple molds, clean edges, stackable for shipping. But manufacturers quickly discovered something counterintuitive: hexagonal tiles were actually faster to lay than square ones.
The reason is geometric. When you're covering a large floor with square tiles, you have to make constant decisions about alignment, offset patterns, and how to handle corners and edges. Hexagonal tiles, because of the way they nest together, have a natural, self-correcting pattern. A skilled tile layer working with hexagons could cover more square footage per hour than the same worker using square tiles, and the finished surface had fewer structural weak points.
By the 1880s, several American manufacturers—particularly those clustered in Ohio and New Jersey, where clay deposits made ceramics production economical—had standardized a one-inch and two-inch hexagonal floor tile that became a catalog staple. It was cheap, durable, easy to ship in bulk, and faster to install than the competition.
The Plumbing Revolution Needed a Floor
The hexagonal tile's moment of true mass adoption came when American cities began installing indoor plumbing at scale in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The bathroom—as a dedicated, separate room in a private home—was essentially a new invention. Before indoor plumbing, most Americans bathed in portable tubs or used communal facilities. Now, suddenly, millions of homes needed a new kind of room, and builders needed a flooring material that could handle constant moisture, resist mold, and be cleaned easily with the new sanitation products being marketed to American households.
Ceramic tile checked every box. And the hexagonal tile, already standardized and mass-produced, was the ceramic tile most readily available in the quantities that a nationwide construction boom demanded. The federal government's early 20th-century public health campaigns—which emphasized cleanliness and sanitation in response to typhoid and cholera outbreaks—specifically recommended hard, non-porous surfaces in bathrooms. Tile manufacturers were quick to market their products against this anxiety, and hexagonal floor tile became explicitly associated with hygiene, modernity, and middle-class respectability.
Architects and builders weren't choosing hexagonal tile because it looked beautiful. They were choosing it because it was available, affordable, and approved by the public health establishment. The aesthetic followed the practicality, not the other way around.
How a Default Became a Classic
By the 1920s and 1930s, the hexagonal bathroom floor was so ubiquitous in American homes, hotels, hospitals, and public buildings that it had become invisible in the way that only truly dominant design defaults can be. It wasn't a style choice anymore—it was just what bathroom floors looked like.
When mid-century modernism pushed American interior design toward larger format tiles and smoother surfaces in the 1950s and 60s, the hexagonal tile briefly retreated from new construction. But it never disappeared. Older buildings retained their original floors, and those floors aged well—the small tiles were easy to repair individually, and the pattern held up under decades of use in ways that larger tiles sometimes didn't.
The pattern's revival in the 2010s—when hexagonal tile suddenly appeared in design magazines, renovation shows, and Instagram bathroom reveals as a "retro" or "vintage" aesthetic choice—was really just a rediscovery of something that had never fully left. Tile manufacturers who had kept hexagonal molds in production through the lean decades suddenly found themselves struggling to meet demand from homeowners who thought they were making a bold design statement.
The Shape That Didn't Need to Win
The hexagon conquered American bathrooms not because anyone decided it was the most beautiful shape, but because it was the most practical shape at a specific moment in manufacturing history, and that moment lasted long enough to become permanent. Roman engineers knew it was structurally sound. Industrial manufacturers knew it was fast to lay. Public health advocates knew it was easy to clean. And somewhere in that chain of purely functional decisions, an aesthetic was born—one so familiar that we now actively choose it for its look, never quite realizing we're choosing something that was never really a choice at all.
